A Misjump is a usually rare occurrence that happens to a ship when it is transitioning from one system to another via an IAP. The calculations for a Jump are complicated and so is the circuitry of the Jump Drive.
Misjump Chances
- The Base Chance of a Misjump is only 1 in 1000.
- The larger a ship is, the odds of a misjump go up slightly. The floor(Ship Class) is an extra 1 in 1000 chance of a misjump occurring.
- The stability of the IAP being used may also affect the chances. Each IAP may have a different stability rating which can be learned after intensive scanning of the IAP by a ship.
- Damage to the Jump Engine always increases the chance of a misjump occurring. Jumping with a damaged Jump Engine should only be done when absolutely necessary.
- The Astrogation Skill of the Navigator or Captain can decrease the odds of a misjump. The floor(skill/10) is a positive effect. So a Class 1.0 ship with a Navigator with Skill 10 in Astrogation would have very little chance of a misjump occurring barring other circumstances.
Misjump Results
A ship that is experiencing a Misjump is completely out of touch with the rest of the universe, even via Ansible. A wide variety of things can happen in the case of a misjump, and include but are not limited to:
- Ending up in a different arrival space square than expected.
- Ending up in a different Star System than expected.
- Much longer or (rarely) shorter time spent in Jump Space.
- Damage to the Jump Engine or other parts of the ship, including cargo.
- Damage to Crew and Passengers, including possible fatalities.
